omg! thats a nice Idea! i think i will also do that if i can find space to plac the lights!! thank you for sharing.. now i steal. =^___^=

Sweet idea, looks great, I'm not sure how water proof they are though, safety concerns?

I haven't had any corrosion issues. Keep in mind, mine are mounted in my light assembly that sits on top of my glass hood (like MurderedOut's original description in this thread). Theres no moisture exposure to speak of.

Any concerns with your normal aquarium lights over-heating the christmas lights and causing problems?

My fixture only has two t12 bulbs, so they don't really get that hot. I'm sure if you had more serious lighting you'd have to consider the possibility of overheating.

I'd think in that situation a separate DIY housing of some sort for the LED's would work better.

So I should be ok adding the xmas lights in my normal aquarium light hoods? Without worrying about over-heating them? They are each (2) 36" long but are only fitted for a 24" bulb (I use Aqua-Glo 24" 20W bulb on each).

looks like a great idea, it might save me goofing around with tinfoil on my bulbs in all sorts of weird and wonderful patterns for the desired effect

LED's don't "rust". The LED or Light Emitting Diode is mostly plastic, that's how surface mount LED's can be so tiny. I may worry about the contacts rusting though, but that is more for saltwater and since this should ideally be over a glass or acrylic top, moisture shouldn't be any more of a problem than it is for your normal aquarium bulbs.

Here are mine....truly "budget". Someday I'll mount them better, but they work for now. Taped in with foil tape.
