40 gal set up

I would still test for everything. Most cycles take 4-6 weeks but my 75 cycles in about 3 weeks!
 
Plan on doing wc every other day like lp suggested but testing cuz I was bored looks like .5 ammonia right ? That's a good thing right ...hopefully will start seeing nitrates soon. .5 ammonia like 3 days in a row

yes ,that looks in the neighborhood of .5..just thought of something new.. do you have a well established tank running ?,,,
 
Do build on the above statement. You can use seeded media or gravel from an established tank to 'quick cycle' this one. For my 75 I put in a cup of gravel from my 30 and 32 ounces of fritz zyme and I think that's why it cycled in only 3 weeks. Sorry to steal that from you bro but I couldn't resist :). And ammonia will keep risng for a while, then drop, then nitrites spike, then they drop, then nitrates spike, then water changes get rid of them and you are done.

Do you have any nearby friends with tanks? If so I'm sure they would be overjoyed to give you their old filter media or 'spare a cup of gravel'.
 
no but I don't mind the cycling I haven't kept fish since I was a young kid so this is like a refresher course. We had a 75 gal that was so overstocked man, back then who knew my dad didn't care and there was no internet. We had two O's, JD, royal pleco, gar, and a red tail cat. and some other cat can't remember. One week we went out and got a two snake heads.... redline and African....all I can say is blood bath I think the pleco is the only one that didn't get destroyed. Haven't had fish since then....

Wow... Yeah that is pretty overstocked. I wasn't aware this was your first tank in for years (maybe you already said that but I can't remember for the life of me :) ). So what do you plan on for final stock? Are you keeping the danios and barbs or getting rid of them?
 
ok no problem .. just thinking out loud....:) it really is a good primer for the odd time you might lose cycle in a tank..still happens once in a while to me and my 6 tanks

not 100% but probably the Asian bb cat and the EJBD. But maybe a salvini alone or pair of cons. Kind of like the barbs ..screw the danios lol. If I go with the ebjd gonna keep them
