I was just starting at the time. And didn't know anything about this site and what I know now. Thanks I ended up giving it to a fellow member I got it from cause one died and the one in the video was getting beat up on by my Mayan and green terror grow outs

A pair wouldnt produce any viable fry...it would have to be a male ebjd and a female regular jd or blue gene female...I dont see why you couldnt tho...

I am in a similar position as the OP. I am finding that getting a breeding pair of something is the easy part. Getting a breeding pair of something that won't kill each other is an entirely different story. Apparently many cichlids will turn in their mates in certain situations.

Right now I am running with the idea of getting some breeding kribs for my 20 high, but a 40 breeder would house any pair that don't get more than 5-6" each.

Whatever you do decide to get, make sure to add some dithers to ensure the pair have something to focus their attention on and strengthen their bond.

It could work as a grow out but not long term. In the right conditions ebjds can reach 10-12". The pair in my video was 11" &10"

Guys convicts won't do you wrong lol. My calicoes were wet pets and got along very well without dithers. It will depend on how well the pair is bonded.

Anything that don't grow over 7". It's really hard to keep a pair in a 40b because the footprint of the tank doesn't allow dithers which can help diffuse aggression between the pair (assuming that the pair grows over 5"). Why not try geos? I don't have any experience with them but I know there are some species that don't grow big and are mild mannered. I hope someone would elaborate on this. Or try a community with rams, kribs or apistos as a centerpiece.

A breeding pair of medium size geos (maxing out at no more than 6-7") would work. Conspecifics is usually low enough that mates killing one another is more rare, but does still happen from time to time.

Why would you say there is no room for dithers? Using small neons or cardinal tetras would work as long as the breeding pair doesn't have large mouths (geos would). You could even do some livebearers (4-6 maybe).

You could do a pair of firemouths they usually are very good as pairs and I rarely hear of them turning on their mate.
