40 Gallon Breeder stock ideas.

A breeding pair of medium size geos (maxing out at no more than 6-7") would work. Conspecifics is usually low enough that mates killing one another is more rare, but does still happen from time to time.

Why would you say there is no room for dithers? Using small neons or cardinal tetras would work as long as the breeding pair doesn't have large mouths (geos would). You could even do some livebearers (4-6 maybe).

Because I'm housing a pair of rainbow cichlids (4" and 3") in a 40 and the dithers have no room to swim. A pair would easily take over the whole tank unless it's heavily planted and mine isn't.

But a 49 breeder is only 3" shorter than a standard 55 and there is plenty of room for dither in that tank. I don't see why dither in a slightly shorter tank wouldn't work. But then there are variables we both are probably looking at differently (like what kind of dithers).
