Hello All.

I have a 40 gallon breeder laying around. I am going to build a stand for it, but in the mean time I am looking for stocking ideas. I have a few ideas but I am still uncertain as to what to do. Looking to have atleast a pair of something or more, maybe community of cichlids.

I was thinkin of a couple severums but feel the tank is too small.

Also was thinking of some Thorichthys or go with some dwarf cichlids.

Need more ideas, help me out!!

id try gymnogeophagus i have some in my 58 gallon wich is same as your tank just taller and i love them i thought of trying sevs in mine but felt it would be cramped keyholes would look great or rainbows

dwarf pikes or some dwarf cichlids like laetacara or australoheros

I agree 100%, but then I've always used my 40 gallon breeder for a pair of dwarf pikes and a pair of Laetacara ...

Ive had keyholes before, havent had rainbows.

Never really been interested in pikes, but do like some of the Laetacara.

Was also thinking of maybe some Thorichthys maculipinnis and cryptoheros Nanoluteus.

Albino and black angelfish?

Thanks for the ideas guys.

Just curious, but what would be the largest pair of fish I could keep alone in this size tank?

Rams would be nice in ur tank with some sand and real plants.

So I am in between getting
Thorichthys maculipinnis and cryptoheros Nanoluteus or Sajica.
or
German Blue rams and Apistogramma Borelli.

tough decision. I have always wanted to try maculip. and ive always been interested in the south american dwarfs.

Blue rams and borelli wouldn't be a good mix, temp wise. Borelli come from the Mato Grasso region and even further south ... and don't like temps over 76F. Blue rams come from one of the warmest regions in northern south america, usually liking temps of 84F and warmer. You would be better off with apistos that come from the same region as the blue rams and can handle the warmer temps.

Or you can do bolivian rams and borelli.

I would think the Thorichthys maculipinnis pair would claim the entire tank, not leaving room for the nano's or sajica.
