How's this for a 40 gallon stock list:half a dozen cherry barbs as top swimmers, one fire mouth and one Severum, and a pair of dwarf rams to occupy my cave.

To small for a Severum and Cherry barbs would get eaten (plus they are bottom dwellers, not top swimmers)

Didnt know that...........all the tanks I've ever seen they were swimming in schools at the top.

What schooling fish wouldnt get eaten?

bigger ones, but your tank is gonna limit the school.giant danios,BA tetras, tiger barbs but these schoolers i think won't fit well in a 40

Bleeding heart tetras?

No chance with Bleeding Hearts. Severum will eat em all at night. You might wana look into Convicts and Jewels. Tanks too small for dithers. No swim space.

Theres actually alot of swimming space because its a high 40 gallon, and nobody is in the swim space because they each have their own ''hangout'' where they sit all day. what schooling fish would be appropriate?

This is my successful community tank... All happy and breeding.

3 Firemouth (1M 2F)
4 Redline Torpedo Barbs
4 Rummies
Taeniatis pair
1 Red Tail Black Shark

Its a 45 Gallon tank... My suggestion to you is to provide lots of little potential territories a bit like I've done here ;)
