40 gallon stock list

What light is that? The lighting makes the tank look attractive! So here's my new list:4 redline torpedo barbs, pair of firemouths, and a Severum. Also, where did you get that driftwood? It's so cool!

I've seen adults in a 25 gallon and they seem happy...... They're only 8 inches, which isn't that big.

severums are easily capable of reaching 10 inches to 1 foot long in aquaria. they may be peaceful for cichlids but they need space. 55-75 should be the smallest size for a severums if they are the only cichlids in the tank aside from possibly angels. in general any cichlid bigger then about 6 inches needs a minimum 55 gallon tank. i'd stick with the firemouth pair and the barbs if i were you

I see your point so I'll keep the Severum in that tank until he seems unhappy with the size of the tank. Could I sell firemouths for a profit if I breed them?

depend where you live. where i live firemouth's are pretty rare and you could probably make a profit breeding them considering how rarely they show up. on the other hand they are very abundant in some areas and are probably not worth very much there. if you wan't to breed them you'll need a seperate tank for the fry or the barbs and adult male and possibly the female. with tetras and a male in that tank size i doubt more then a couple will grow to selling size.

Why? Also, I live in nj, how much would I get there?

to find the price it's best to ask the fish store if they'd buy your fry. but no store i know will willingly buy day or week old fry. generally the stores want to sell fish around 1-1.5 inches long so you have to raise the babies to that size, which may take a few months. if you keep the barbs in the tank with the breeding cichlids they'll eat the eggs and fry. cichlids may be good parents but if they're swarmed by schooling fish they'res not much they could do about it. also if the female comes into spawning condition again she may eat the fry to make room for her new brood. once the babies have grown a certain amount the male will treat them as either food or potential competition for his territory and bully them. you should really look to someone with success breeding firemouths for more advice.

here's a thread for someone who bred firemouths.

What fish could I keep that wouldn't eat the fry?
