40 years old this year and frustrated

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So fishing is my one true love, aside from my wife and children.

Lets get a few things out of the way:

1. I love and appreciate my family
2. i have a job
3. i have a home
4. i drive a car
5. i have my health

I know and appreciate all of this beyond words.

Here's the deal,

1. I just entered my 40th year, and i am no closer to owning my own fishing boat then when i was 20. With a mortgage, bills to pay, credit cards, loans, childcare etc. I would have no idea where the capitial would come from to purchase even a modest aluminum gas driven bass style fishing boat.

2. to make matters worse, what the heck would i tow even a modest aluminum bass style fishing boat? With my 1998 Chevy 4 door sedan? God no. So even if i had the money for the boat, I wouldn't have the money for the vehicle to tow the damn boat.

When I see people launching thier bass boats, I always wonder, aloud sometimes, how the heck can these guys afford these things, and the trucks that tow them?

In conclusion, I am always at the mercy of my dear friends and family who have boats. god bless them. And i should be happy to have such family and friends, which I am... it's just that I always had a dream that i would own a boat by this point in my life, and that me and my son and daughter would travel around, fishing this lake and that lake.

There is a lot for me to be happy and thankful for. I KNOW THIS.

But when it comes to fishing and owning my own boat, well my latest birthday has been a kick in the onions.

Please tell me there are others out there like me. misery loves company.

I accompany you in the Misery department ( although I could care less for a boat ) and am reminded of that every birthday ( my 49th this coming January )

But the awesome things we have ( and that you describe in your post ), still put us, worldwide, in a very comfortable position.

It cannot be called Misery, at the end of the day...

Those guys just have WAY more debt than you do.

Yeah, I guess it's not misery, or anything too terrible, with all the bad in the world, but in pure terms of my fishing satisfaction, i've been dealt a bad hand, as I'm sure many people have, and in that sense it's pretty crappy.

Buy a small paddle boat and an old truck. Find the police auctions around you. Can usually find trucks for really cheap. My buddy bought a 2000 silverado for 500 bucks at the auctions. Just had to buy a new windshield for it.

Can't and won't.

reason - i want to fish with my kids so it has to be a reliable truck (see: new/gently used) and a reliable boat. And gosh darn it , i want a gas powered boat with a bow mounted electric motor.

Therefore folks, you see my problem. Like anything in this world, money talks.

They usually are at police auctions. A lot of the vehicles have been seized ( at least around here) and are fairly new. I even saw a ferrari once. Belonged to some drug dealer. It is the police selling these cars. I doubt they would sell you a lemon.

for 500 bucks you wouldn't take the gamble on a 2000 silverado? i'm positive you can unload it for more then that if you didn't find it reliable. auctions are great for finding bargains. Sometimes you have to take the road less traveled to get what you want.
