400 gallon bio-tower filter

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
for comparison i run on my 5000

1 bio tower 12x96
1 bio tower 18x96
4 55 gallons drum of bio balls with oscillating level for lots of oxygen

PLUS mechanical filters.....as dr joe asks....what is the projected load ???

i circulate nominal 375 gpm probably about 20000 gph real flow

Note: johnptc's bio towers are really Bio Towers.

so with the 400 gallon tank i have, can any 1 draw me a pic or tell me a good design for the filter. and you really think the 2 pumps should be on the bottom, both pumping up to the tank. by the way the filter is lower than the tank. by the way, each pump moves 5000 gph, u think just letting the water fall down the tube is fastenough, because i could make like 5 tubes suck the water.

You get pics of this monsterous tank yet?

nope, thought id be prepared b4 we buy it. so does any 1 have any answers to my questions yet or no?

A 400 gallon tank might make a good prefilter but it'll never be big enough to serve as a bio-filter for a 5k tank...

An actual Bio-tower is simple in concept....easy to construct and you won't be out a 400 gallon tank that could be used for other fish. Personally I'd take the output from the existing pump...feed it into a 10' Bio-tower and then use a transfur pump to lift the water to a top mounted mechanical filter.

would a bio-tower work better than a 400 to 500 gallon filter, it might be 500 gallons cuz im pretty sure its 4' x 4' x 4'.

Bio-towers are VERY effective provided your pump can handle the head pressure. A backflushable bead filter would be my first choice for mechanical filtration. especially with this tank going outside.

You can also run a roof mounted solar water heater before running the water into the bio-tower(s) without needing an extra pump.

any directions or pics of how to make it? by the way i could always do the 500 gallon filter and a bio-tower.

Bump the tank to 10,000 gallons, do a 1000 gallon biotower, and hire a team to train your dolphins.
