400 gallon CA tank update

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cross, great job on the tank. That's a funny story about where it came from. I know what you mean about this being a small world.

$50!!!!!! Wow, what a great find! Can't wait to see it up and running!!

an apartment building like ie a concrete structure with a lobby, elevator etc is the most stable flooring you will get next to a concrete basment floor. you could put over 10 thousand pounds on the floor. now a building with wooden beams and joists is another thing and I wouldnt do it either

Well in my house I could park my car on the main floor no problem as my Joist are 12inches apart and are 2x10's bridged together across a supporting beam resting on the foundation the total span of both sides of the house is maybe 12 of each side so my main floor above my finished basement is pretty solid, but I would never put a tank bigger than 150 gallons just because of a break factor of the tank and I have hardwood floors. Plus the floor may start to bow after time which I don't want at all. I would feel much safer to put the tank resting on solid concrete lol.

looks better already.

is the tank not level or you just couldn't get it level where it is?

No tank is perfectly level it's just I couldn't get it any more level without one side of the tank going up 6 inches and being unstable. As you can see the left side of the tank has two patio bricks and a couple wood shims trying to level it out. I didn't want the tank to far off the ground.

Just invested $820 in filtration. Bought a Fluval FX5 for $250 and a Eheim 2260 for $300 magnum 350 for $80 and $30 for a Penguin 350. Media costed me just for the Fluval and Eheim $130 still have to buy Media for the Magnum and the Penguin 350. Fluval came in today. Eheim came in a while ago. The fluval came in 4 days late. Was supposed to come in within 10 work days but it ended up being 14. Well thats what you get from the USPS lol. I think by the time I am done I will have close to $1000 of filtration on my 400 gallon. Here's pics of my Fluval that just came in and two 5L boxes of Ehfisubstrat and EhfiMech.

Nice! But why not just go with a large sump?

I don't like running sump filters. MUCH rather have closed systems. Canisters are my main filtration choice. Plus the FX5 beats a sump with water movement any day. The eheim not so much but the Eheim is setup 5x better that the Fluval.

Really? IMO, nothing beats a wet dry sump for it's filtration capabilites, especially biological filtration. My water movement is awesome too with my pump moving 1800 gallons per hour.

The ease of cleaning the filters rocks too. Just slide out the trays, throw away the filter pad and put a new one in. Then slide the trays back in...Done! Breaking down and cleaning canister filters takes 10 longer and lots more work.

I'm still jealous of your 400 gallon tank though if it makes you feel better. :)

make sure you post the 3d back ground project , im thinking of trying to make on to, looks nice great pick up.
