here's kinda the idea of what the final product will look like. Cept the beams will be more mohogany stained, and the panels on the inside of the beams will be a cherry like shown.

Thinking also of doing the top out of thin plywood, and glass or clear plastic something along those lines, and hanging long shop lights above it. I have catfish so I can skimp on lighting somewhat. Only time the lights will be on is tank maintenance, and showing off to the neighbors and you guys lol. How much does that tank cam run johnptc?

superb

great design, looking forward to the finished product, i understand youve never done anything like this before but you would be happier with either a bigger window or more
:)

anyway good luck your cats will love you for it

If 30" is the max I can easily adjust to where the glass will only be 30" exposed. Like I said never did this before, and last time I tried to plan this out no one offered much assistance in the way of figuring up glass thickness needed. If thicker is needed this project will take much longer than expected. I am limited on how much I can spend at a time, and therefore this project will take a long time to start with lol. Looking at getting it done by this time next year. Gives me plenty of time to work out all the bugs in my plans. If only I could get a second job! Damn military! lol

oh, does it make a difference for thickness if the glass is tempered or not?

Not really sure. I'm working on a tank similar to yours using 2 48x30 and 2 18x30 as the viewing panes. I'm salvaging the glass from a leaky 110.

A little confusion on glass max height x thickness. Is it the max that the glass can be or is it the max that the water depth can be or both?

I think it applies both ways. I am not really sure if it applies to the viewable area as my glass will be sunken into the fram about 7" on top and bottom and about 3" on the sides. Sometimes I wish that I had the knowledge of a structural engineer. Guess if no one answers I'll have to play search a million sites to find out lol. if your's is similar we should share ideas as we go along. You'll probably be done way before me. Got a thread started already?
