Human contact doesn't just mean human in this instance.... it means your fish are in capable of contacting the glass... Personally I would be using Acrylic but I would also say that 1" in this would work just fine if it's tempered since you didn't mention what you were pricing out (plate or tempered).

but then again ... never hurts to go overboard on the weakest part of tanks...

Tempered

Apparently the company that supplies all of the glass guys here in town doesn't make 1" thick glass anymore, the thickest is 3/4". Not sure how to get in anything larger. All the glass people say they can't get it in. Guess I might have to drive 200 miles to the next biggest city in montana to get it if they can! grrrrr.

I'd go with cell cast acrylic. Here's an online supplier-
http://www.delviesplastics.com/Clear_acrylic.htm

The max size for UPS shipments is 2' x 4' pieces, but the prices are the best I've seen. I've ordered from them a few times.

I believe you can have it trucked in full sheets, but the shipping price usually costs atleast $150.

If you could find a local supplier that would be even better.

Here's an update. Most of the lumber for this project will be free. Courteousy of the building in my back yard with no floor, but plenty of reuseable lumber. Hoping to gather some more lumber on the base next week at the scrap wood pile.

Yeah to make matters worse there's no local suppliers for glass or acrylic over 1/2" thick. The largest that the local suppliers are willing to ship in is
3/4" thick. WOuld love to get a 1" thick piece that measures 4' x 6'.
