here's my old 55g. definitely a different ball game. high lighting, co2, ferts, trying to balance out algae, its a very involved hobby. see, i feel the opposite. i think planted tanks are more about personality, looks, being in tune with nature, etc. monster tanks are just too impersonal for me, too sterile i guess. most people make it just about the fish. for me, its the entire package, the aquascaping, the plants, the fish, the shrimp, the snails, everything. i love how its an entire function ecosystem in a glass box.
