440g System Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I meant the reason for air tube into the sump but i think it is because you have k1 and using it to spin the k1.

For the air tubes, I should buy a new manifold/splitter for the airlines. The one I bought has 1/4" outlets for the airlines but all the airstones I use require bigger tubing, so I have to use 2 of the 1/4" outlets to connect with a T to 3/8" or 1/2" airline tube to go to airstones for the tank or the sump. Not a great setup but it gets enough air to the locations needed for now.

For the return pumps, I have 2 of them. 1 for the sump and 1 for the Ultima. Both use a reeflo dart/snapper hybrid. I have the sump set up with the dart configuration for slower flow and the Ultima set up with the snapper for slightly higher flow. I might change them over time but they seem to push plenty of volume for now. I have a bare spot in the front-right corner of my tank where the water pushes out of the return pumps and hits the front glass, then turns down to the bottom of the tank and pushes all the sand away from that location.

Yes, I have an airline going into the sump to move the K1 and I have another airline going into the sump for a large sponge filter in case I need to seed another tank or just for extra filtration.

Couple minor updates, I bought an IT Datnoid last weekend. Currently in the 40 breeder quarantine tank. LFS said they had this group of datnoids for about a month so I'm not too worried about parasites/etc but good to be on the safe side. They said they eat Hikari Vibra Bites but I haven't been able to get him to eat any, so I've been feeding him frozen bloodworms which he devours. He's about 2-3" long and he'll eat an entire cube of blood worms in 1 day. Would be nice to get him on pellets but at least I don't have to buy live food for him to eat.

For the big tank, I painted over all the nail holes on the front of façade and got a new piece of drive wood to put on the right side of tank to complement the piece on the left. It's pretty big and it floats.... So this may take a while for it to sink. Here's a picture of it floating on the right side of the tank. It pushed up against the acrylic eurobrace so it stays in place which is kind of nice. Hopefully it doesn't take too long to sink.

Some things I still need to do to complete the build:
1: Move the apex monitoring system from the quarantine tank to the big tank.
2: Finish painting and edging the stand (can still see the plywood between the tank and stand)
Buy more sound dampening foam for under the stand. This one isn't necessary because it's already pretty quiet, I just want to put it everywhere under the stand to make it look better.
3: Move the 2nd LED light from the QT over to the big tank for better lighting and buy a new/cheap light for QT.
4: Buy stingrays when Geos/Datnoid are big enough to not be lunch.

Just washed it off a few times. It will probably leach some tannins into the water but I don't mind it. Should all go away after a couple water changes.

I haven't updated this thread in a while because most of the summer the tank just had the Geo's and silver dollars as I waited for a good deal on some rays.

Mid September I found a deal I liked and got 2 Rays. They are BD ti x SWC mix, born July 10th, 2021 (1 male/1 female). I got them in September and they were about 6" across. At 1st they would only eat frozen blood worms but now that I've had them for a while they've starting eating Carnivore pellets/shrimp/clams/night crawlers also.

Here's a few pictures from when I 1st got them.

I also picked up a fairly large flagtail for free around the same time I got the stingrays. He's about 9" or 10" long. Here's a picture of him.

And here's a picture of most of the tank mates as of this morning. Some of the Geo's and none of the Silver Dollars are in the picture.

The Datnoid has barely grown at all and I've had him for a year. I guess that's alright since he's probably rule the tank once he's bigger. But the Geo's have definitely outgrown him this year. They are starting to get their streamers on their fins but the red heads aren't very prominent yet. I also just have 1 lighting fixture in the top middle of the tank so they might be more colorful if I just shine some more light on them.

Can't forget these guys also, I have 4 nerite snails in the tank also, the stingrays like to knock them off the glass when they find them. They usually just live on the driftwood. The rays can't eat them yet so the rays just use them a soccer ball and roll them around the bottom of the tank until I move them back to the driftwood.

I forgot to mention, I also got my Apex setup on the big tank. This thing has been amazing and is a great piece-of-mind for when I'm gone for the weekend or just want to check up on the tanks health. I have it leak detection and sump level detection as well as alarms for if the ORP/temp/PH are out of balance. I still test my water every other month with the API test kits but Ammonia/Nitrate/Nitrite has always been good (so far).

Don't judge on the cord management, I just bought a new rack system that I'm going to install this on/in over Christmas break to make it look a lot better.

And here's a look at what the Apex dashboard reads, in case you're curious what all it can do. It's very user friendly and would highly recommend it to anybody with expensive fish even if it's freshwater. You can automate so many things with this, like water changes/feed cycles/light cycles/wave makers/etc.

Sorry dude, I can't follow this thread anymore those cords are a mess and are going to cause all kinds of problems

Haha yeah the cords need to be fixed, at least I have them off the ground and a drip loop in each one. So I gave it minor consideration. The problem is I have pipes coming out the back of the stand so I can't push it up against the stand. So I'll need to be creative with how I wrote the wires to hide them eventually.
