48÷2(9+3) = ???

Answer is 2! In Singapore, we ASIANS (im proud to be one HA!) are taught to always do the bracket section first, followed by left to right sequence! so its definitely 2! :)

we'll we have the real answer.

nothing more can be added.

Incorrect inside the () is one number, outside has to go with left to right progression. As far as making it an algebraic equation does not pertain, if so then solve for y in this case y(9+3) with y=48/2

With your other example it would have to be written as (48/2x9 + 48/2x3) which equals 288.

With your method what is 1/2(9+3)? Is not 1/2 equal to .5?

you can't go left to right until you solve 2(9+3)

but for y(9+3), it's easy if y=48/2, you'd have to find y before you can multiply it by the sum of 9+3.

but you misunderstood me when I used "/", I used that because I don't have the "divided by" symbol on my keyboard

when I said 48/2(9+3), I meant 48 divided by [2(9+3)]

so to respond to your 1/2(9+3), that isn't my method, but before I can answer that equation since you asked it, I'd have to ask you, do you mean 1 divided by 2(9+3)? or 1/2 multiplied by (9+3)?

reading it out, I read the op equation as 48 divided by 2(9+3). and not 48 divided by 2, then multiply it by the sum of 9+3

i'm not a math matician nor am i a math magician, but i'm going by what i was taught in the U.S., highschool or whenever it was that i first learned it and college

again, i'm sticking with the answer being 2

You have to go by left to right progression this is written out as, one divided by two multiplied by the sum of nine plus three or 1/2(9+3) or 1÷2(9+3) or 1/2x(9+3) or 1÷2x(9+3) all are the same.

To make say as you wish you only have to look back at your explanation hilited in red. You would need an additional set of parenthesis to denote that the sum of 9+3 was first multipled by 2 and then 48 would be divided by this sum.

This is true though you need to multiply the sum by 48/2 and not just 2.

Actually.... Now that I think about it... The answer is 288.

48/(no divide sign, shall use /) 2(9+3)
= 48/2(12) (which is 48 divided by 2, times 12. Therefore, 2 is not in the bracket multiplying by 12. 48 should divide by 2 first, which is 24, and then multiplied by 12.)
= 24(12)
= 288

Yes, from Singapore.

yes those are the same, you answered my question though

i asked if you meant 1/2 multiplied by (9+3) or 1 divided by [2(9+3)]

apparently, you meant the first one

so 1/2 multiplied by (9+3) is 6

if you meant the second one then

1 divided by [2(9+3)] is 0.0416666666666666666666666666
