48" light over a 6' tank??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ive done a similar setup using a 2 foot fixture on a 4 foot tank it lights up th middle and then fades out at the ends i like the look but yes if you have no plants it should work fine.

i only have a 30" on my 6'er...

If you have one single light yes it will fade out the ends. I had 1 on my 180 and I didnt like it, so I bought 2. Worked out because when I built my 270 I didnt need to buy another one!

Anyone have a 48" light over their 6' tank? Would it be enough light for a 180 or 125g?
checkout the first Tank of teh month contest (nov 08 I think) the Frontosa tank that one was a 6ft tank with a 3 ft light.

that's how I do most of mine.

if it is up on legs over your glass top, it would light more of the tank, yes.

but I would imagine a 4 foot light raised slightly on the leg mounts would probably light something like a 5 foot area. so you may still have darkened ends.

I use 2-36" double flourescents on my 6 foot 150g.

these ones, from Aqueon: they are awesome fixtures.

check out my vids and you will see that when i had a 48 inch t5 Dual linear fixture the tank was dark in spots and it looked tacky, not to mention its hard to see things!
i upgraded to a 6FT 8 t8 BULB fixture and WOW what a difference,
but you dont have to go extreme like me!

all depends how much light you want. i had a 4ft T5HO light on a 7' tank and it was more than enough for me. as stated, raise the light a few inches off the tank and youll get a lot more light

The tacky look really depends on the wattage and its elevation from the lid. My 36" 96w power compact light can light up my entire bedroom.

In fact, if it's dark outside and you happen to drive by my house, my room is blue.
