480g Brainstorms

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been reading up on the overflows. I'm a little uncomfortable with either the herbie or bean. I'm probably gonna do a durso with a single 2" drain. I was doing a search on flow rates and a reef forum claims a 2" pipe can only push 1350gph....then flexpvc.com says 3300gph. I believe the later since I have a 3000gph pump on my 350g with two 1.5" bulkheads that flow into a 2" tube (long story not worth writing about).

Also, I plan on using flow accelerators on my fx-5 returns and possibly the sump returns.

I installed one of these with an fx-5 on another tank it is great!

One issue is that this is a 1" flow accelerator and I can't find 1" loc-line anywhere. Anyone have any leads? i have contacted the company but they are located in Taiwan so I'm not holding my breath.

Nope. I have one ocean clear running on my 300g with all my stock (plecos and other community fish). It helped catch all the driftwood particulate. I'm going with 2 FX-5's and a 100g sump with my dart pump.

ahh ic

Egon is correct. The tank is going flush against a wall so the major plumbing has to be done inside of the tank. I love those overflow boxes but I have a small house in Southern California (the price one pays for being close to the beach). I am going to allow about 1/2" of clearance to run airline tubing and an extension cord for the lights.

If I ever have the funds and the space, I will have the overflow boxes like that.

did i pick up a soft shell from you a while back? i remember picking up a soft shell from someone in south bay / redondo beach

I have a bunch of the 1" flow accelerators, they work great. I also could not find 1" loc line anywhere? Odd? Anyway I snapped off the flow accelerator part on one unit and used that loc-line to extend another unit (pricy but my only option). On my 120 I took off the accelerator part altogether and just used the 1" loc line part because it was too much flow. Tip: Get 1" threaded bulkheads for your returns and the flow accelerator just screws in.

Dang, that sounds expensive! I'm looking at some low profile 1" threaded bulkheads to make installing on the overflow easier. They are only 1" long and with a 1/2" overflow box, it should fit nicely.

knobhill go with the bean overflow, u could use 2'' bulkhead to 1.5'' piping so that you could but bigger pump in the future,

I won't have room to accommodate three 2" drains in the overflow. Also, I think tuning it would be very difficult considering that the drains will be 4ft higher than and not in the line of site of the valves.

Update: just picked up 3 MASSIVE pieces of driftwood! Will be posting pics tonight :)

On the 48" L x 30" T tall tank it creates a nice shimmer and a bright white light (10000K).

When I put the light on my 60" L x 48" T tank, there was no shimmer :(

I have heard that the shimmer effect is created by having some turbulance at the water's surface. Is it possible that your 30"T has more movement at the surface than your 48"T tank?

I'm also thinking about getting these Beamworks LEDs. Looking forward to seeing pix of yours in operation. =)

Yes you did. How is it doing?

sad it didnt get along with my favorite aro... was a real character.
