5.5 Gallon can this be done?!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I saw an apistogramma today I was so tempted to buy but this tank is wayy too small. Tetras it is. I found some banana plants today, those look sweet. Might pick them up tomorrow only $1.50

I would get a really fancy dancy betta like the ones on aquabid and do a really nice planted tank or even some ottos look pretty neat. Then again so is the mini reef! Mini tanks are starting to be all the rage I hear.

Quickie google and I found this lil neat tank

There are any number of different types of danios- longfin varieties, albino varieties, etc. . . I really like cherry barbs- I have a few of them in my 20 gallon community tank, and they look awesome after a couple weeks of getting used to your tank- their colors really pop. You can look at rasboras as well- pork chop & harlequin rasboras are really pretty. My pork chops school with my cherry barbs & add bright orange flashes of color to the mix. And people will scoff at you for it, but there are always guppies. Look into them a little and you'll find that there are some REALLY pretty ones out there. One or two of those in addition to some danios or something else on the "plain" side can look really cool.

I work in a pet store and we sell TONS of 2.5 and 5.5 gallon aquariums. It takes longer to cycle a small tank for a lot of people (many crash it by adding too many fish too fast & have to start over), but it works. We get customers in who keep 10+ fish in their 5.5s. The trick is to keep up on maintenance. I also recommend 50%+ water changes every week, but on a tank that small, you're talking 2.5 gallons.

Thanks bro and everyone else for all the info/advice. I added some banana plants today, they're really goofy looking and I always wanted some. Will be adding more plant life later this week. As for cycling it I borrowed my cousin's betta but it seems to be struggling with the current (fluval 1 is actually for a 10-12G aquarium). I probably won't be adding the fish until 2-3 weeks from now or whenever my params balance out.

banana plants may get too large for you. For a 5.5 I'd look at Anubias nana, java moss, micro swords, hair grass, and dwarf baby tears. Those "banana plants" may get too tall for you.

Also, what fish are you looking at putting in? Anything other than rummynose tetras?
