COMEON .. you know you'd have to have SOMETHING fishy in there...

Chocolate fish?? :D

Seriously.. something with 'dwarf' on the front of it's name is probably a good start. Dwarf loach, cory, gourmai etc. Anything with Giant on the front is probably out ;)

I used to breed White Cloud Mountain Minnows in my 5gal very successfully, and it currently has about 6 male guppys and a very small pleco in it. So yes you can actually keep some fish in that size tank, just think small.

Cheers

I could also use it as a fish flake container. But seriously, I'd rather set up a tank of a greater magnitude than a 5G. Be it a fish tank or not, I still would not set up something that small were I would regulary view it.

Well not exactly feeders ;)

But yes they are small fish, look similar to Neon Tetras but they are actually a type of carp. They are quite pretty and only grow to 1.5" long. They are egg layers but VERY easy to breed. They also dont need a heater in the tank as they aren't tropical, although you can keep them at cooler tropical temps.
To breed them you just need a pair of fish, some water and a heap of plants like Java moss and leave them too it.

Pics and more info here.

I'm sure you could breed them in a 10 gal no problem. It's just that you probably need a heck of a lot of them to actually feed anything. No problem getting them to drop 50 fry, but then you have to grow them someplace for 6 months untill they are more than just a snack.

because thats how much a nice sized tank costs

I think what Mystix means is that those small tanks cost a lot for what you get. The price of a 5 gal tank, add just a few more $$ and get a 20gal thats much more versatile and better value for money. For any newbie just starting out, avoid the 5 gal tank and just get a 20gal. Not much more cost, and you can actually keep some real fish in a 20gal ;)

But if you already have a small tank, then no problem with setting it up with some small fish and sitting it on the end of the bookcase etc.
