looking for ideas for 50 gallon tank,preferably a decent size cichlid,like a pike cichlid or a JD that can be kept solo

If you like jds then keep a jd in it. Most don't get bigger than 8" and if the tank starts to look too small upgrade.

I'd look Into a Salvini preferably a female for many reasons.
- amazing colors
- reasonably priced / readily available
- very hardy
- develop the same nasty temperament as many of the larger cichlids just in a smaller package

I had a JD with a pair of cons and once the cons started breeding I got them a separate tank once the cometition for food was gone he got pretty lazy, but every fish is different if you like JD's as a solo pet go for it I'd recommend getting a small one that way it'll become responsive to you

EBJD's are very cool but man are they sensitive. I just lost mine, twice I have bought them as fry and cant seem to get them past 3 inches. I here this is common. Ever thought of puffers? I have two GSP's in my 75 they are very entertaining. Two would do well in a 50 gallon.
I'm a big fan of biotopes. Whatever you choose try and keep the same eco system. Just google some different rifts out of South America or Africa. Have fun with it!

yes i have started my research on the JD ifgured it couldnt hurt to get an early start. slavini/ hmm ill have to check that one out
