Oh man! Sorry for the big loss! I lost $300-$400 of haps/peacocks/fronts last year while on vacation so I know how you feel. Still haven't had the ambition to replace it yet. That is a beautiful set up and the stock was looking good!

Fish got cook to death all the time due to stuck heater. In the last ACA show in NJ, a bunch of show discus were cooked to death because of oversized heaters in small tanks. None other cichlids were affected becasue it was summer and no heater was needed.
 
I had this happen two weeks ago in my 120. Heater malfunctioned and all my moba frontosa cooked to death. Still trying to decide what to replace them with....
 
That tank looked awesome, even my gf got a little envious (which means I know down the road I can go that big)... Sorry to hear about your loss... What are the black spotted fish?
