50watt uv running 600 gph

Kill ALL THE THINGS! lol. The slower the flow, the more effective a UV is at killing free floating organisms. 50 watts seems a bit much but if it's what you have to work with it won't hurt anything.

I've heard of 40W and 58W but who makes a 50W unit? Is it two 25W put together?
Effectivity is dependent on brand of UV and tank volume including sump.

Tank is 200 gallons, with 50 gallon sump running a 1200gph return, a 900 gph return , and now a 600 return but the 600 is what feeds the uv.

That 55W is more than enough. You're dosage is about 91 mJ/cm^2. Ideally you want a dosage of 50 mJ/cm^2.
Just for compaison, my calc for a 58W delivers 38 mJ/cm^2 for a 600 gal tank. You got a similar size on a 250 gal. You got yourself a hotrod.

Correction. JK47 is smarter than kendragon......knew the answer without doing the math.
38mJ/cm^2 is the output dosage but because this oversized UV is used on a smaller tank, the UV dosage jumps to 91mJ/cm^2. This is due to the turn over rate. The pathogen get's zapped more than twice compared to a 600gal tank. Only concern in using such a large UV on a small tank is overheating the water.

Uv has been setup for a week now and I had to adjust the heater in the sump down 2 degrees to keep my water at 80.5 since install.
