55 gal companion for oscar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
a full grown oscar can live fine in a 55gal

of course..the bigger the better...
i suggest just keeping him with the bichir, and the cat, you really cant fit anything else in there

I would hate to see a 12 inch plus fish turn around in a 12 inch wide tank! Can it survive sure will it live a full happy thriving life?

Dont get any more fish your tank is too small for what you have.
A full grown oscar cant really turn without hitting his face on the glass in a 55g

IMHO a 55gal is the absolute minimum for a single adult O of average size (10-12"SL), and no tankmates.
Decor should be minimal, e.g. a single plant and a sml-med flat/rounded rock or two (every cubic inch is needed for swimming space).
Filtration should be heavy and feedings light...
Maintaining relatively low NO3 (<20ppm) is the goal and may well involve two large water changes per week to maintain.

Personally I consider a 75gal as minimum for a O, and with a 75gal a tankmate(s) are possible if carefully considered and if they find each other compatible.
I would suggest a single sml-med Cat, Pleco, Cichlid or misc fish, or perhaps a small shoal of dither/target fish, e.g. Silver D's, Danios... But I digress....................

I say decide on either the O alone or the Bichir & Featherfin together...
The Common needs to hit the road, a large Commons mega production of waste just about maxes a 55's bioload unless your vacuuming poop daily.

thanks for the answers guys. i've kept the O for nearly 2 years now and she (at least i think) has grown from a baby the thank is 15inches across so turning has never been a problem.
i did take on all these fish with very minor experience but the longer i've had them the more i keep telling myself things have to go and i need to upgrade regardless.
i keep the tank filtered with an overlarge fluval external and do 40% changes once weekly and light feeding.
im not defending the fact my fish need more space i just want you all to know i do care about the inhabitants and im trying my best to keep them all happy, just some things are going to have to go back to my LFS soon, i've been putting it off for weeks now because you cant help but get attached to them.
anyway i forgot to say the O is about 10inches so she appears to be quite a small one and hasnt grown in months, but anyway i just have to start taking things back... slowly in the hopes a new 125 will crop up.

thanks guys.

p.s the decor is very minimal, i removed all decor after i switched to tropical fish, i has 2 small plant pots and a small peice of bogwood.

p.p.s today i shall take back the two largest and muckiest fish : giraffe and pleco, by my calculations i should be able to rget a replacement tank just after xmas so one question for you, will the GT's,bichir, oscar and featherfin be ok for that ammount of time? the senegal is about 9inches, featherin is full grown and gt's are quite small, female is about 5inches and male about 7 i know it is not ideal to keep them like this but over a shrot period? this clearly would be preferable to swapping them all for credit imo!

i kept my 11 inch male in a 55 for a year before he was put into a 125gal, he did not become stunted, he ate non stop, was always active, never stayed in one place, and there was plenty of room for him to turn around

i agree that a 75 would be better, MUCH better, however..one can be kept in a 55 without problems

thanks for the feedback mightyoscar.
the giraffe and plec went back to my LFS :(
amazing how much space they took up!
i had a browse round for complete tank setups, i found an aqua one regal 120. its a 300litre with external cabinet and fairly good lights thats about 73gallons and £575
the other.. more suitable i was looking at was a rena for £795 thats a complete setup 433 litre... about 115 gallons.
clearly the rena is the way to go as its larger and better quality.
could it work out cheaper to buy things seperately though? make the stand, buy the tank, pick up a few high power filters and a light unit?

thnaks guys your filling a void with useful info

it would probably come to about the same price, the tank, and lighting will set you back, depending on the filtration you want, IMO canisters are the way to go on big tanks, theres more media, its quiet, and you get more GPH with the better models

i would find out how much everything would be, to buy seperately, before you make the decision

good luck
