55 gallon hiding fish :(

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
when i have fish that like to hide i take their hiding spots away until they get used to it. then i give the spot back and usually they dont hide anymore, if they do i scare them out until they give up.

you might try some floating food instead of the sinking food force them to come out to eat

4wheelin, we only use floating food with them, they might come back but they dive straight in.

We do water changes weekly also and there is only a couple fish so it shouldnt have high nitrates etc.

my guys used to be that way untill i added lots of hiding spots but mine are all africans all i have to do now is walk into the room and they rush to the front of the tank, but uping the tank temp can help otherwise sorry man im out of ideas

You could try removing all decorations...plants....drift wood....etc....

That is a horrible idea. The fish are obviously scared or uncomfortable taking their hiding spots away will keep them in a constant state of terror.

Also a bad idea. When fish are skiddish like this forcing them into the open is cruel.

The best thing to do is provide MORE hiding places. If they know they can hide if they need to they will be more inclined to venture out. Feed them twice a day every day, bump the temp to 80-ish, and make sure you don't have any subwoofers or anything to frighten them.

We have tried adding hiding spaces before with this suggestion. We had more plants and rocks then you could possibly believe but they still hid for the entire duration. (over 2 months) We just took everything but a couple rocks out, we will keep you posted.

We already tried more hiding spots. All of the fish disappeared when we did that.

We are going with less for now just to see how it goes.

When I had this problem, it was my female JD causing the trouble. My other fish would swim and interact openly in my presence. But as soon as the nervous JD darted away and hid, so did my other fish. I rearranged the tank hoping that it would stop the fish from hiding. I even added more plants and hideouts. But the JD continued to dart away and hide, causing the others to do the same. Finally, I removed the female JD and all of my fish stopped being spooked and hiding. I'm not saying that your JD is the problem, but it could be one nervous fish causing the other fish to panic and hide. IME I've found JD, especially females to be hiders and nervous. A bump in temp can also help. Strong lighting can also make fish hide. If your tank lights are too intense or on for too long, many times fish will stay in hiding.

I forgot to ask this.

How long do you keep your lights on for and what kind do you have?

We jsut have standard lighting in the tank nothing special. We dont leave them on all the time either, just when we are around (wurdeman is my roomate). The tank is exposed to sunlight during the day but it is not directly shining on it.

We removed the hiding spots and the fish are all swimming around very actively. I think our nervous fish is the salvini most likely.

As of right now they are active, the silver dollars are all swimming together, the crayfish is crawling around looking for a place, and the Jack Dempsey is swimming around doing her thing.
