About a year and a half ago I decided to grow out some $0.20 feeder comets for my Oscar tank "clean up crew". They were about 1.5" long back then, now there pushing 5" not including the tail. Very sexy indeed, I don't know why more people don't give feeders a chance. :(

Anyways I decided to grow out some more for the Oscar tank. I have 2 in there now, I'd like to have 5. I have the (9) 2" comets in a 20g wide right now and in a few months time I expect it'll get a bit crowded. I have this 55gal white plastic drum that I use to store dirty tank water in. I use that water on my gardens. I'd like to put the comets from the 20gal tank into the plastic drum over the summer and into the early to mid fall. I did a bit of research and it seems like its not an uncommon thing to do.

The water going into the drum is "imo" quite clean. Ammonia 0ppm, nitrite 0ppm, nitrate 1-3ppm, and there's no visible objects in the water (fish waste etc.), fish water containing poo skips the barrel and goes directly onto the gardens. I know your thinking "why doesn't he use rain water" well simply because the eves are built in a way that I cant get the drum or even a bucket under the down spout.

Assuming I'm on the right track, I have a few further questions:

-Where should the drum be stored? Full sun, part sun, shade?

-Do I have to feed the fish? The drum usually has mosquito larva in it when I forget to cover it up. Also Algae will sometimes grow if I provide sun, if comets will eat that stuff?

-can algae alone provide enough oxygen for the fish without a secondary air source (air pump, plants, agitating the water by hand every day)?

-what minimum and maximum temperatures can comets tolerate?

no responses? Perhaps this should be moved to the pond section?

Store in part sun comets will not eat.algae, yes you need to feed larvae will be gone quick. Far a filter i would get a cheap pond fountian/filter. I have 2 comets in my 125gal pond both close to 10". i feed koi food. Btw they were also sold as.feeders. Hope this helps.

Forgot far as temp mine live outside all year and im in virginia we have cold winters and hot summers. I think for a low down in the 30's and ideally no hotter than 80. If you were to keep them out in the winter so long as it dont freeze over you're ok . Dont need to feed in temp under 50° when fish slow down and start to hibrenate .need anymore info just let me know.

Thanks for the info.

As far as a filter goes, I really had no intention of buying one just for this barrel. The gardens need to be watered everyday and it takes close to 15 gallons to do it. So every day, 15 gallons of water go back into it. I hope ammonia wont be a problem, I'll have to keep checking it.

I found my dads old piston pump way in the back of the crawlspace, covered in spider webs. It's been sitting for nearly 20 years. I took it apart, cleaned it and lubed everything up. I was surprised to find that it still works, even though its around 35 years old. It has no problems pushing air through my 15' hose and into the plastic barrel. I have it sitting by my basement window with the air line running out the window, under the deck and over to the side of the house. I put the pump on a timer, set to go off at 8am for 30min and 8pm for 30min. I don't trust it running more then 30min at a time, it tends to heat up more then I think an old motor should. The fish seem happy in there new barrel, and with more then double the space, they should be. :)

Will post some pics within 30min.

I didn't realize there were this many leaves under the deck. I gotta get around to cleaning them at some point. :grinno:

Man that is an antique pump. Do you have a check valve on the air line? If not i would add one if you are turning the air on and off you dont want a syphon to start and drain the water especially with that much drop. Looks like it should work though.

I did have one, but I took it off cause I thought it was restricting the airflow to much.
