Hey guys! I'm new to SA Cichlids. I wonder can I keep 1 Jack Dempsey, Green terror and a Texas in a 55 gallon tank? I have a 500l/h filter. If I can't.. can I atleast keep one of them?
My opinion is a Herichthys cyanoguttatus and the JD will out grow a 55 in less than a year (if bought young), and will kill one or the other, in such small tank. A 55 is a grow out tank, not a true community tank, as far as cichlids go
A full grown JD at 10" needs a minimum 100 gal (to be in a community(a more than 1 species tank).
And a full grown Texas needs the same.
To me, any cichlid over 5" needs a much larger tank.
My rule for myself is, for every 1" of adult, you need "minimum" 10 gallons.
Below is the kind of space they live in, in nature. Eden2
and one other minor detail, JDs and Texas cichlids are "not" South American cichlids, they are both from North America.
Belanosox Belanosox, Apolcheilus lineatus, Betta Macrostoma, Convict cichlids, any jewel cichlid, Peacock cichlids, small haps, any Neolamprologus, Julie, Altolamprologus, any microctanapoma, a lone piranha, exodons, etc.
If brackish, there are hogchokers, archers, scats, monos, and puffers.
If your going to feed your new cichlid small fish make sure you either raise them or quarantine them to avoid diseases. Also keep in.mind it's not the best nutrition and should also feed pellets and other foods as well.
