55 gallon tank stock list

I have also heard selecting different genus will reduce chances for hybrids. It I think if you keep you're male/female ratio high then your chances for hybrids lessen. I have heard of this working for a lot of people.

I am aware most any can thats why I have spent weeks trying to put together a well researched list. I can see the bars being the same on the afra and salousi but was thinking the orange back should distinguish them enough to cut my chances down. I know with any mixed tank it will always be a possibility. My understanding is with different genus, different colors, and a good male to female ratio per species I would minimize the chance.

I asked because the replies I was getting was it was a good setup for hybrids. What I have now is a good set up for hybrids Cobalt Blue Zebra, Pearl Zebra, Orange Zebra and OB Zebra as I have learned. So after researching and taking advice this is what I came up with to get rid of my fish and restock following rules people have used to prevent hybrids. So when my response was so negative to my stock list I just wanted to know why they thought it was a bad list.

alright I'll break it down for you. If you want to breed mbuna, a species tank is the only way to go. If you want a mixed tank and not going to be selling fry off, then you are fine with your mix. Can you have them breed and stick with their own kind? Yes you can, mbuna tanks are tricky. I have a mixed tank, and I am not going to be selling or giving away fry. So I am not worried.

No matter what list you come up with you will have a good chance of hybrids if you mix mbuna together. It is the simple fact of mbuna. Most people do not recommend mixing and breeding. So you stocking list could go on forever. Is your list better than a bunch of the same fish but different color morphs, yes, but the risk is there. As long as you are responsible, I think your plan is great.

Also the more fish you have in a tank, the more opportunity you have for a male to break up the breeding and another to sneak in and finish the job. So take this into account as well.

The trouble you have to remember is that a forum is full of other people's opinions. Some opinions will never get you a list of fish that will be happy. You have to just do as you did put together a list of what you are most happy with guage the opinions and then go with what will make you the happyest,

I hope this is a better explanation.

Thank you. I guess I should have asked more about aggression. This isn't for breeding purposes, this is for a show tank in the living room. Maybe one day I would like to breed and will have single species tanks with wild caught parents in them.

Still working towards my ultimate stock list but here is what I have right now:
Electric Blue fryeri, OB Zebra, Pearl Zebra, O Zebra, 8 Afra Cobue fry, 2 Pictus Cats, and 2 Clown Loach

Since you don't want this tank for breeding purposes, go for any of those stocklists. Sure, you might get hybrids, but the fry will get eaten pretty quickly if you leave them in the tank.

BTW, if you get Clown Loaches, get at least 4 because they will be much happier. Clown Loaches will some day get too big for a 55, but they grow so slowly that 4 will be ok in a 55 for a very long time.
