I'll disagree with that author. That's pretty much a case of "I want it" syndrome. Hard water won't kill them immediately, but they will develop deposits on the scales. They don't really like being in aggressive communities, and usually hide often in setups like that. Most African Keepers use them as snail cleanup and aren't really interested in the loaches for their aesthetic value but for their utility.
