40b are 18" wide.

They should be 648sq.ft. and 615.2sq.ft. .......... The 40B is 36 x 18, the 55 is 48.25 x 12.75 (although those are external dimensions, so it still isn't going to be exact).

again, it all depends on what fish you keep.

Very true. I bought a 60 which is a taller 55 but I knew it would house an angelfish so the added height was welcome. For cats or most cichlids it's all about the footprint. Height doesnt mean much for them.

Ok thanks, i think I'll go with the bigger footprint since I'll most likely have bottom dwellers. Im waiting for a reply from the lfs about ordering a spotted bullhead, they can generally get most fw fish so I'm hoping it will not be a problem.

IMO you really can't keep a bigger fish with either tank, your looking at 10-11" max. Boils down to which you like best.

Can't buy a 36" light? :screwy: I've got two of them sitting a top my 125g.

The standard bulb sizes found in most none fish related stores such as walmart, home depot, lowes, etc... is 18", 30" and 48". Sorry but i rather buy $7 aquarium/plant bulbs then lfs $30 bulbs.

Which is fine, but why mislead the OP by telling him that the longest lamp he can get for a 40b will leave him 6" short?

I like the width of the 40 better. But when it comes to water quality... the more water the easier to keep up the quality. So I have to go with the 55 gallon. (but it does depend alot on the type of fish)

It realy depend's on what tipe of fish you want. Im actually getting a 55g soon

because obviously the OP is on a budget... i'm sure if he's looking to only spend $40 + plus tax or $55.00 plus tax on his future tank, he wouldn't want to buy a 36" light fixture for $80.00+ bulb.

common sense... no? :screwy:
