A big school of tiger barbs, with a rainbow shark and a pair of bolivian rams. and maybe some kind of nice top swimmer.
 
Speaking of tiger barbs, a combo I've wanted to try is a big school of tiger barbs with a big school of skunk loaches. I've heard of lots of people trying it, and with both species being semi-aggressive, or at least extremely active, I would think it would work well

I wouldn't get oscars or anything like that, they will outgrown the 55g in a heart beat.

Yes, it will in fact work excellently. Skunks are very nasty fish and should never be mixed in a general community setup as they are very feisty and can severely injure any fish incapable of defending itself. Skunks are best kept with barbs that can move around quickly and defend themselves well enough. Arulius barbs and filament barbs will also work well however these ones grow to 4 and 6 inches respectively.
 
I like the red devil suggestion. But if you want a tank with lots of movement i still think the tank with a school of like 10 tiger barbs, a rainbow shark, a pair of bolivian rams and a bunch of live/fake plants would look great. you could even do all three types of tiger barbs (normal, albino, green) and have an amazing looking school. You could probably do even more than 10 with adequate filtration. if it'd work a large school of cory cats would be nice too. gouramis would also be nice.
 
A red devil or any other big cichlid like that is a bad idea for a 55. Even a 75 or 90 is pretty small for even a single big cichlid like that
