Get a Red devil

Mine is in a 75G but theres plenty of info on the net saying 55G is fine for them. Not only do they look awesome, they will be EXTREMELY interactive with you and your family. Mine lets me pat him on his tumour (nuchal hump) and he goes mental at anyone who walks past his tank, even if an insect flys past he chases it

But seriously, they are an awesome fish and if you can get him on a good diet he will red up nicely.

Just dont expect to be able to keep anything else in there with him, even silver dollars arent tolerated by mine. The other day I saw a full grown RD down at the LFS that was easily pushing 14 inches that was 3 years old. He was freekin awesome. Trust me, get a RD!

RD's are awesome fish and get pretty crazy sometimes. Especially when their tank is too small. If you're thinking RD and never going to upgrade, make sure you get a female. A male will get too big and be absolutely insane in a 55. They need a 48" x 18" minimum.

i would get a jack dempsey and some giant danios for him to chase around. then he wont hide all day. well, my dempsey is usually hungry so he patrols the whole tank, and the only other tankmate are two cons.

The Red Tiger Mota, Fastae (Female) Grammode or Salvini (Female) sound like the best choices to me.

Get a Midas or a Red Devil.

My midas is 14" long... not much room to move around in a 12" wide tank! I would suggest going with fish that will top out around 10" or so.

A pair of grammodes would be a decent fit.
