dont take the chance, unless your sure its a female my red devil hits the glass tank so hard that im alwasy afraid it cracks i could just imagine if it was a make who are bigger and stronger,i wouldt take the chance

I've seen huge fish in 20 gallon tanks at the ACA and they don't break the tanks. I'm not sure breaking the glass is an issue at all.

maybe they cant get up enough speed in a 20 lol

That's because the fish at the ACA are for show... Only for like 1 day. All of the things you are thinking of stocking will ALL outgrow your tank, or live a very sad life.

I currently have a 10+inch RD in a 55g as a wet pet. While it can be done as others have stated it probably shouldn't. Forget that they will out grow the tank(which is true) or that they can break the glass(?). Just know that there really isn't alot of space between you and the fish when it comes time for water change!!! A RD/Midas raised alone really sets up boundaries and anything(including you) will be attacked upon entering its domain. I would check on craigslist for a used tank. You can find them there pretty cheap if you're quick enough. Then after you've upgraded tank size list your 55 and recoup some of your money. It'll be better for you and your fish in the long run. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Male Green Terror!

More personality, better colors, meaner, grow faster.
Get a false GT at your LFS.
Start with a couple of the larger, healtier ones in the tank to increase the chances of getting a male.

FYI - they will jump out of the tank so keep them covered.

imo i think a red devil is capable of cracking a tank that the glass isnt thick enough,im not sayin it will happen im just saying theres always that chance of it happing red devils really are glass bangers, and hit the glass at 90 mph with alot of force,i no i have one. i didnt say anything wrong all i gave was my opinoin

I agree that a 55 may be a little small for a rd male. I know that the 20 gallon tanks are for a short stints at the ACA show and in no way are meant to sustain large fish for long periods. I simply gave my opinion on the glass-cracking ability of any fish in a 55. No one said anything about anybody saying anything wrong.

GO WITH A GT AND TWO MALE CONS...THAT WOULD BE INTERESTING

A few 6'' cichlids. Like convicts, firemouths, cutteri, or rainbows. Also a small school of smaller tetras, barbs, or livebarers.
A 55g is too small for a "glass banger", because those fish are larger and more aggressive. They can only be community fish in LARGE tanks.
cant salvinis be glass bangers??
