You are on the right track, but I wouldnt add the cons. They are a bit too aggressive fr the others and themselves. Even Jewel cichlids are very territorial.
lol cons are a bit to aggresive my texas ripped a hole in the side of my convicts head(thhere the same size 3 inches almost 4) and yes the convict went into a tank with his female and bred again and is healing at a good pace isnt that a happy storie??

In a 55? :screwy:

GT.

OSCAR!!!! they get huge, they are really great fish, they live as long or longer than a dog, they eat from your hands, they get 13-14" long and will come to know their specific owner

not in a 55...

My 55 is centered around a 12'' mayan cichlid, not the prettiest fish, but lots of personality. He's probably going to have to go in something better though soon :irked:

If its for life, i thing a GT would get too big even. Sure it probably wouldnt get over 12", but if its mean and a glass banger then it will probably hurt itself spazzing out at you. I personally couldnt imagine my large GT in a 55. I have mine in a 72 and am already thinking about a bigger tank for it.
Really though, a 75 gallon tank would be minimum for alot of the fish being mentioned here IMO. If you do go the red devil/GT/trimac route, at least get a female or a bigger tank.

I think your best bet with a 55 is firemouths or salvinis if you want males. I think Rainbow cichlids are also very cool, saw some the other day at an LFS and they were at the glass and seemed very interactive.
