guys, this thread is proof that he's trying to fix the mess he's created. if you look at the stock list in his 55 gallon and compare with what he originally asked about, he's trying to get rid of the fish that won't work in there and find out what will work.
in previous threads he was told not to keep the jags, pacus etc but I don't recall anyone going into detail about green terrors and jack dempseys because the other fish commanded the first and most attention.
He's still asking questions so he's trying to figure this thing out.
Killdog, at the same time, when someone gives you advice as to what you can keep in your tank (especially when you're asking about what you want to keep in the tank long-term with no tank upgrades) and think that their stock list in their tanks contradicts what they're telling you, you need to keep in mind that a lot of people on here have been keeping these fish for years. A lot of the people on here have fish in tanks but only temporarily with plans to upgrade in the future. You stated clearly that you have no plans to upgrade to a larger tank so people are going to recommend to you what will work, LONG TERM, in your tank. Their tanks may not necessarily be setup for the long term. So, if you ever have questions about things like that, you should ask instead of throwing that back in their face when you don't know their situation...especially when they're trying to help you.
Now as to what you originally suggested...no, 1 GT and 1 cuban would not work long-term in a 55. You could
probably get by with one of either species with nothing else but maybe some fast dithers but no other cichlids. I wouldn't do a mated pair of either in a 55 either since there is no possibility of tank upgrade in the future.
I would also not do a mated pair of cons in a 55 with other fish. As cons continue to grow they will require more and more space. Once they breed and reach adult size, they will be guarding their shoal of fry around the entire tank and no other fish will really be safe.
If you want to do more than just one mated couple I think your best bet would be firemouths. You could do a very nice tank with 6-8 firemouths (you would have to dwindle this number down to between 4-6 as they grow and pair up) because firemouths often times can live in a community type setup with multiple pairs assisting in rearing each other's fry. However you then have to be wary of what you're going to do with said fry.
My advice would be to stay away from breeding for now (not that you ever said that was what you were trying to do or anything) and do what some others have suggested with 1 JD, 1 FM and 1 Con...preferably all the same sex. You might have to buy 2-3 of each and grow them up a little bit before you can sex them and then get rid of the leftovers.
