Well Peacock bass is a definite no unless you have a 300 gal waiting in the wings.

No Oscars they need 75 at a minimum.

EBJD would be your best bet. They most likely would only get 10 in. tops, some get bigger, but it would take forever.

If you want cichlids, which is my assumption, you could do a pair of cons and they will breed like cons lol...you can do firemouth. Not much of a choice because the width of a 55 makes it a sub par cichlid tanks.

As mentioned, Pbass and Oscars both get too big for a 55.

How about a Green Terror?

What do you want in your fish? Personality, aggressiveness, playfulness, display, or conversation pieces? There are a lot of options if you're willing to go beyond LFS and order online, but you need to know what you want in your tank first.

I've never really quite understood why Oscars can't be kept in 55gs, so long as you give good filtration and water changes. Consider most end up in 10gs and 30gs. JD or Green Terror would be more lax on maintenance though. Peacock bass are out.

i want it to be entertaining also during feeding time just so i dont get bored with the fish i plan on maybe breeding some cons or mollies for feeders for a snack occasionally

would a 75 gallon tank be better? i think i could save a little more and get it and how much of a dif would it make in fish selection

Because 55s are 12 inches wide, and Oscars get 12" and bigger.

If you want color and want to be entertained during feeding, check out the African Cichlid section on here and see if those spark an interest.
