would a 75 gallon tank be better? i think i could save a little more and get it and how much of a dif would it make in fish selection
YES! A 75 will most definitely increase your selection

I'm a big fan of south American fish, mostly for the corie cats, they are energetic and highly entertaining in sandy bottomed tanks. You can keep a few in a 55 quite easily. For the mid level, I've kept firemouths successfully with cories and they are pretty entertaining and easy to care for. There are a few other reasonably sized fish that would do fine as well. If you keep fish under 10 inches the cories will be safe and they are really adorable to watch.

Going up to a 75 would give you the option of an oscar. They are easy to get and pretty interactive. Better plan on a pretty hard core filter though, they are waste monsters.

I recently purchased an african cichlid, yellow lab, and I have to say hes awesome!!! Hes aggressive at feedign times but doesnt hurt my other fish, hes good looking, and hes not afraid of anyone, some fish spook off if an unfamiliar face gets in front of the tank but not him, Id say go with some african cichlids. Also you could get a used 75g off craigslist for about the same price as a 55g, you just have to find one but keep looking, 55s are good too and theyre all over the place, dont pay more than 50 bucks for a 55g unless it comes with stuff, I say add ten for filter and ten for stand, roughly. But being from florida fish tanks are common, dont know how it is where youre at

Little word of advice when looking for a tank too, I email everyone within a similar price range as to what Im looking for and either ask for a specific price or ask what their best cash offer would be, make it sound like youd buy it immediately if they meet your price or go low enough.

im from missouri not much for fish keepers around here lol... my lfs only has the african cichlid, i actually have a yellow lab atm hes in a growout tank in the moment i like him but hes just not quite big enough id really like to see a fish around 7 to 10

idk bout the cories but firemouth is a good suggestion ill def keep that idea

There are lots of cories available if you should change your mind. Another good one if you're up for lots of water monitoring is Pictus catfish. They are energetic and shoal. There are several types and some of the vendors on this forum have them for sale now as well as a wide variety of cories.

I kept emerald cories with my firemouths in a sandy bottomed tank decorated with drift wood and java fern and they did amazing. I've also kept pictus and they are hilarious at feeding time, also shiny and fun to watch as they swim around.
