I'm in the process of getting a 55g tank. Want to keep jds, green terrors, oscar, or green texas cichlids.Which of these would breed and live well in a tank this size. Oscar i think would be too much?

yeah jack dempseys are the smallest, so i figure they would do best in a tank that size

is that the only fish your considering?, because there are some other cool cichlids you could put in there

You could do Jd's, steer clear of oscars and Gt;s in that tank
personally i would get a big group of geo's

wow poo i meant to say gymno's!
anyways you have alot of options if you want bigger cichlids you could do jds for sure
i think a dwarf tank would look cool

i was thinkin of a 75g, but i saw a 55g setup for 180+ the stand so unless i find a 75g setup at petco or petsmart im goin w/ the 55.Its pretty funny you guys say a 55 is too small for gts and oscars considering my cousin has: at least 2 jds, had 2 oscars, gts, cats, ect... all in a 55! the tank was loaded w/ caves, ect.. and sadly there were not many territorial issues. oo and he had jags in there! He was rele lucky no fish got killed.

My cousin could cram an A. gigas into a 29, doesn't mean it's the right way to do things. He either does water changes every day/second day, just doesn't care about his fish, or never learned any better.

Just look at an empty 55 gallon tank, it's not a big tank at all.

Not to be rude but your cousins a moron, listen to us (not convict_breeder though.) I would never purchase a new tank because of the cost. For $200 or less you can get at least a 100gallon if you look on the pets section of www.craigslist.com and theres also classifieds here you can look too. If you decide to do carpinte/texas make sure they'll be able to live in your water. I've been able to keep every type of ca/sa cichlid alive accept for texas's and carpinte. If I were you I'd save my money until you find a fish you really like because the fish you named live a average of 10-15 years. Which ones do you want to keep..? Also.. Don't just go out and buy petsmart fish, a lot of the time they are hybrids and don't turn out so nice. Find somebody locally that has nice fish.
