55gal Stand and tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yea i would like to get a bigger tank, lol (bigger is never big enough) but the convinience of everything comming in this kit is what has driven me to get it. For now i believe that this is what i am going to stick with but down the road is a whole nother (is that a word?) story. :) As for stocking, i was planning on 5-6 african cichlids along with my pleco and maybe another 2
How big would the other plecos need to be not to get picked on?
Would clown loached be ok as well?
How about a Jack Dempsey or electric yellow?
any other ideas? i like bright colored, interestingly shaped fish

I really want Cichlids thought, i just love the way they look and swim when i visit pet stores (never had 1)

your location. They have at least 2-4 of those little aquaon complete

Only here would someone just dismiss a 55 as little. lol :ROFL:

The Africans are nice, try to find a LFS (not petco) and you can get them much cheaper... My petco has a 4 inch African for $25.. What a joke. Just make sure you put enough hiding places.

As far as plecos just put one in there, but im not sure the loaches will do well with an 8.0 ph

You could also do smaller American cichlids... Black convicts, firemouth, blue acaras, and many others grow under 6 inches and you can have loaches with them!

As far as a JD goes the males get upto like 10" and their really mean fish, so if you get one o would have him alone in there

Yeah if you want to do a JD that will be your center piece fish and it certainly won't be a community. Maybe a small dither is about all you'd be able to do.

IMO Loach grow too big to have a shoal of them in a 55 gallon tank.

You could have a nice variety of african cichlids in a 55 no problem. Definitely only one pleco. And if it's a common pleco or gibby IMO they get way to big for a 55 gallon as well. Those commons can get up to like 30."

Loaches do grow big but I'm sure he can have about 5 for a year or so in there

They get rather large but are also known for how slow they grow. That being said why would you want a fish (in this case a whole shoal of fish) in your tank if you can't sufficiently house them when they're full grown and will just have to find a new home for them in a year once you've grown to enjoy them?

Sounds like a bad idea to me.

It's Friday. Any update on this setup?
I wish that more than you do. lol I am going to walmart later today to get air pump and tubing..... maybe some fake plants, my walmart has a pretty good selection, but no fish or tanks. So the petco near me is supposed to be getting more tanks on Tuesday. Conveniently the sale ends Monday. LOL coincidence?? But luckily i got a rain check and also i have a 10% off coupon so i can still get sale price. I hope that aqueon or the petco warehouse doesn't have any production/ stocking problems and tanks will come in on Tuesday, unlike last Tuesday. So basically, what i hoped to finish this weekend, has become a standstill. I will be going and getting 100lbs of pool filter sand and a background this weekend. Any other suggestions?? Wow that was a lot to type but thanks for being interested.
