55gal wet pet

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeh, when i use to live in Virginia and had a larger tank I grew a couple of pleco's out to over 2 foot long in my oscar tank.
I'm not even sure why I was thinking about pleco's because they typically don't do anything for the tank algea and i have a MagFloat scraper for the glass. Pictus might be an option, but if i'm going to go that route i'd probably want to introduce them well in advance the the cichlid so that he doesn't set up the entire tank as his territory. Filtration is not a problem since I have a large fluval can that is a leftover from my larger tank days.

Hello members. I'm glad to get back into the aquarium community. My tank has been down for a little while while i got over losing my breeding pair of JDs. I've had a lot of experience with Oscars, JDs, African's and planted tetra .............................. about all the tank will manage? Of the ones listed what do you think will best fit what i'm looking for? Thanks for your help, and sorry for so many questions in my first post.

The most personable single showcase fish one can buy is the MIdas Devil.......I say Midas devil because there are so many cross breeds between the two now..........But if you order from a reputable breeder like Jeff Rapps, then you have yourself a quality monster..........The Midas grows pretty quick, sometimes reaching a foot(12 inches) within 12 months.........Most reach 7-9 inches within their first year and then slow down........A single 50% water change every week is healthy for the fish.....A variable diet of fozen krill, mealworms, crickets, popcorn shrimp is a must.........A staple everyday diet, morning and night, is the pellet............Hikari color enhancing pellets is what I have been using since the 1980's...............

Good option. I'm not saying that down the road I won't upgrade to a larger tank (there is a possiblity, and I've always talked about making a large built in tank at my house), but for at least the next year or so I will have the 55gal.
I might try to swing by Fintastic this afternoon if I'm down toward Charlotte and take a look at their stock and talk to them about special orders. If I have no luck there Rapps might turn out to be the best option for getting exactly what I want (especially since i'm looking for a male).
So the short list... C. Grammodes is at the top, followed by A. Lyonsi, a smaller variety of Pike and then the Flowerhorn.
Any objections to a couple of pictus with these options?

I think some posts here exaggerated about ruling out the green terror and I see they got u discouraged since ur not considering it anymore. GT rarely get's to 12" and plus u'll have like a year and half at least till it reaches full size. If it's alone in the tank it won't b skittish at all IMO and will b doing very good with weekly wc. Gold Saums have amazing colors. I really think u should go for it since that was ur wish from the beginning.

With nothing else in the tank i think you could do the GT. Maybe seeing one in your tank will give you the motivation to go through with that upgrade and get your larger tank...

Oh Yeah, GO HOKIES!

I went by Fintastic yesterday and was amazed at their selection. I'll defintately be headed back there later this week, maybe Thursday to pick something out.

I think a single GT would probably work fine in a 55. But if you just said that you were willing to upgrade to a 75gal in the future, that changes things a little. I think that a midevil would be ok in a 55gal for 1.5-2.5 years (until it starts gettin close to +10ish inches). It would definitely need to move as soon as you could manage to get yours hands on the 75, but as long as you actually upgrade to the 75, you would have several more options of big cichlids to choose from.
