I am looking to trade in my current fish as he is a very angry individual and lives only to maim and kill. I want to establish a breeding pair in this tank and I want something not hyper aggressive with great color. I was originally thinking about a group of juvie festae to be paired and then the pair moved to a larger tank when their size dictates such a move, but I am not a fan of moving fish. And seriously not a fan of under housing a fish. I am now thinking that a pair of Salvini would be sweet! Would this work for the tank I have long term? I believe the adult max size is like 7.5" for a male and 5" for a female. Is this correct? What are their aggression levels typically like? And how hard are they to breed? Would you recommend a group of say, six juvies until I get a pair and then remove the rest? And at what size are you able to distinguish between male and female? Also are there any visual distinctions besides venting? Any other comments or advice (As long as the are constructive) are welcome and desired. Thanks in advance for all of the help.

Rams, jewels and sajica,... Thanks for your input but... No. Not interested in those species. Really becoming more and more set on Salvini as I do more and more research. And the LFS has some 2" f2 specimens in stock for like 10$ a piece. I see males have more pointed fins? Should I be able to determine male or female at this size? And if so what is the likelihood of getting a compatible pair by just buying 1 male and 1 female?

A salvini male get up to 7" so i say No on the salvini pair in the 30"L x 18"D x 24"H tank..

well since you seem to be set on salvini go for it and soon you will only have one salvini in too small of a tank. any cryptoheros or thorichthys species should be good in that size tank. I love when people ask for advice and then shoot down any they get and do what they want. why come here then?

I hear you, I was worried about the 30" footprint being a problem but I have two other tanks at my disposal that are currently unoccupied. a 90 and a 125. I was allready leaning towards using the 125 for the pair. but do not want it to look empty. any suggestions for co-occupants?
