well since you seem to be set on salvini go for it and soon you will only have one salvini in too small of a tank. any cryptoheros or thorichthys species should be good in that size tank. I love when people ask for advice and then shoot down any they get and do what they want. why come here then?

No complex. This sir is the definition of speaking down to someone. If you feel like you are too smart to be bothered with a thoughtful response to my question then why post at all? I asked a legitimate question and got a good deal of constructive help from others. Then I get a flaming from you. As I said before, I appreciate your advice as I am certain you know more about the topic at hand than I. But your delivery needs work.

I think a pair of Firemouths would be fine in that footprint if you have good filtration + w/c's. The length is not the best, but it has a nice depth. A 40b would've been nicer though

Otherwise, I would go with a pair of EBJD...you could even keep 3 or 4 of them in there. I kept 8 in a 60 tall w/ no problems. They are beautiful cichlids with fun personalities especially during feeding time. And usually no aggression problems when theres a few.

I would think they would grow too large for this tank? How big do they get?

I never spoke to you like you were an "idiot" if you feel that way maybe you have a complex about it. your first post indicates you have already stocked the tank with a fish not suited to that tank size. there are only a handful of species of central/ south American cichlids that should be kept in that size tank and you have expressed you are not interested in any of those. If you have bigger tanks and are interested in the bigger species then put them in one of those tanks and be done with it. you could put a 12" dovii in a 30 gallon tank if you want it will fit but anyone with some experience would advise not to do so. just as everyone has suggested something other than salvini for that size tank. I do apologize if you feel my response came of as disrespectful I can assure you that was not my intention. If I were you I would put a salvini pair in your 125 and enjoy watching the natural behavior of those very colorful and awesome fish. I am a purist at heart that loves watching central American cichlids in as close to a natural setting as possible. good luck with your decision.

this is good stuff... Well most of it lol. I appreciate this post. Btw the fish in the tank was only to be there temporarily until i move in a few months as i have no desire to set up my 90 and then break it right back down. He's fine in there at his current size alone for the time being. But I will be going a different direction in any case because he is a nasty critter and once he gets bigger he'll probably be more than capable of drawing blood. So yeah, in the long run he is certainly not suited well for this tank. But I have no intention of him being there for the long run. On a side note i found some salvini at 1" that the store owner wants 1.29 a piece. Lol oh well. No way im setting the 125 up for three months to grow out 1" fish. Ill just have to wait. Thanks for your input.

Well since your 125 is empty do a pair of pure A.Labiatus red devils from Jeff rapps there amazing my pair already bread and I didnt even have them for a week and they did I know "red devils" are comon but there all most likely a hybrid of Midas and devils if you like a cool protective pair I would do them

It's sort of a difficult footprint to stock with sa/ca isn't it? I like the tank but dang its starting to frustrate me. I really do not want to put convicts in it! LOL

I had this same tank and got rid of it just because of the frustration it caused when trying to figure out stocking for it. It is a nice looking tank but the footprint severely limits stocking options.

I originally used mine for an Angel tank and honestly I think it works nicely for them.

A small group of sub 6" cichlids along with dithers would be good as well; as mentioned in previous posts.

I think it could also be used as a home for a 10" wet pet... If I still had mine I know this is what I would end up doing with it.

Good luck with the hunt and make sure to keep us updated with what you end up going with.

i'm using it now for a 6" wet pet but i am having a hard time with keeping just one fish in a tank. And eventually he will get too large for it. I dont think i would use it for something much larger than he is now though. I considered angels and i really like the idea of doing a heavily planted tank in this footprint but i dont want to invest the money in the lighting and all that stuff right now. Thanks for your response.

EBJD's seem to stay smaller then their normal colored counterparts I'd say 7-8 for a male is normal but 9-10 is possible as with any fish.

i dont think it would be good to have three or four 8" fish in this tank. One would probably be a little cramped.
