56 gallon column

well since you seem to be set on salvini go for it and soon you will only have one salvini in too small of a tank. any cryptoheros or thorichthys species should be good in that size tank. I love when people ask for advice and then shoot down any they get and do what they want. why come here then?

Im sorry you were offended by my response in no way am I shooting anyone down. However, I am not obligated to take someones advice on species selection if it is not a species I am interested in. In case you have not read any further you may like to know I currently have a 90 and 125 unoccupied so the tank size is hardly a concern. I was merely uneducated as to the final adult size of these fish until I did further research so I thought they may be possible in this smaller tank. this tank is a difficult footprint to work with as far as livestock I am interested in. I like the idea of the thorichthys meeki for this tank and am curious how many individuals would be safe to keep in this footprint. I appreciate your input but in the future you may want to employ less of a hair trigger. I am relatively new to the hobby and still learning but in no way am I an idiot and I certainly won't be spoken to as so. Thanks for your consideration in the future. I hope you will continue to offer advice in a more constructive manner.

I LOVE this idea... how many would be ok long term in the 56?

In the long term, probably just a single pair of firemouths along with a group of green swordtails or something similar (the swordtails could occupy the upper regions of your tall tank, and would provide a nice contrast to the cichlids). In the short term, try a group of 5 or 6 young firemouths and let them form pairs naturally. Depending on individual temperament, you may be able to keep a group of several individuals together for some time. However, in my experience a pair would eventually dominate the footprint of your tank. Keep in mind that firemouths typically reach 5-6" in length, and the footprint of your tank isn't very big.

I have this same tank and would not even consider a breeding pair of Salvini in it because of the footprint. I might attempt it with a 4ft 55g however. Right now mine is a grow out tank till I can figure out what I want to do with it....

 So I would love to hear any other suggestions to the OP.

It's sort of a difficult footprint to stock with sa/ca isn't it? I like the tank but dang its starting to frustrate me. I really do not want to put convicts in it! LOL

Ill probably go with the firemouths but dropped a thread in the african side to see about calvus or comprisseceps(not sure on that spelling). always loved them. If that won't work it will definitely end up being a breeding pair of firemouths. Thanks for all of your help. Even to those who found it difficult to be helpful.

For me it was an extra tank that replaced a 29g. It works out good for my location because it fit where the old tank was but has a lot more gallons to deal with. It is really an all purpose (grow out/hospital) tank for me, since I have my main tank (210g) set up in my living room. But when Im done with growouts and what not, I still need to find fish for it. I have a Firemouth in my 210g, maybe I will put him in there.

I never spoke to you like you were an "idiot" if you feel that way maybe you have a complex about it. your first post indicates you have already stocked the tank with a fish not suited to that tank size. there are only a handful of species of central/ south American cichlids that should be kept in that size tank and you have expressed you are not interested in any of those. If you have bigger tanks and are interested in the bigger species then put them in one of those tanks and be done with it. you could put a 12" dovii in a 30 gallon tank if you want it will fit but anyone with some experience would advise not to do so. just as everyone has suggested something other than salvini for that size tank. I do apologize if you feel my response came of as disrespectful I can assure you that was not my intention. If I were you I would put a salvini pair in your 125 and enjoy watching the natural behavior of those very colorful and awesome fish. I am a purist at heart that loves watching central American cichlids in as close to a natural setting as possible. good luck with your decision.

I know you said no to convicts but what about Honduran red points.

Thought about that! I think I would be more inclined towards firemouths at this point in time though. Thanks for the suggestion. I may have to revisit that possibility.

I think a pair of Firemouths would be fine in that footprint if you have good filtration + w/c's. The length is not the best, but it has a nice depth. A 40b would've been nicer though

Otherwise, I would go with a pair of EBJD...you could even keep 3 or 4 of them in there. I kept 8 in a 60 tall w/ no problems. They are beautiful cichlids with fun personalities especially during feeding time. And usually no aggression problems when theres a few.
