What lights are you using? It might be worth looking into doing some light dosing of the water column since anubias and fern get nutrients straight from the water.

I'd also recommend getting more anubias and fern maybe....just cause I like having more heavily planted things going on. There are also a bunch of different varieties and species of both.

I think my tank will mostly be anubias and Java Fern also. Sounds like I ought to ditch the root tabs and use liquid fert?

Are my plants looking pretty good though? Im mostly concerned with the bit of brown algae on the edges of the anubias and not sure what I should add/change for better growth and less algae. Also rather not have anything too complicated. 20140505_210749.jpg

The tank looks really nice but I would add a few more plants.
I added some Corona horned nerites to take care of that algae.
Don’t let their size fool you, they are probably the best algae eaters I’ve ever seen…….

I would as urs4 said, get some of those nerites, I have seen them work wonders on planted tanks, I would also add a few oto cats, they will help with the algae too.

Ill look into nerite snails, honestly havent considered them because ive gone to great lengths to keep this tank snail free but iirc nerite snails need brackish water to breed? Ottos always died very quickly in my care, they end up sucked into the filters and the stainless steel mesh guards I ordered dont fit. I was thinking I was off on my nutrient levels and hoping someone could tell me whats lacking or overdosing.

As far as adding plants I was just going to wait a week or 2 and take the wood out and split the plants I have now and fill it in that way. Seems to take about a month for the plants to adjust to being submerged before they really grow so im thinking splitting what I have now would be best if I can be patient. Java fern has tons of plantlets starting on the leaves

Too bad about the Ottos. I just decided to add some in the near future, as I've been trying to figure out some brown algae issues myself. In the algae sticky above, it mentions brown algae being common in new set ups, but I have a feeling I have other issues.

Mine has been running close to a year, just not planted for long. Where the plants are growing well there isnt any algae but the edges of the old leaves are

Pulled the wood out and reattached the java fern with gel super glue and got rid of zip ties. Made a bit of mess with glue but not too bad, was able to divide a bunch of fern and spread it out some and got about 6 baby plants so far20140526_222939.jpg

Very cool!

It may be too much light and too much nutrients for those low light plants, and its not heavily planted! It still looks great!

Your already dosing liquid carbon and that usually slows down algae. Try pulling off all the infected leaves and lowering you light cycle to 8 hours or raising the light a 3-5" higher. And dose 25% less fert, see if that helps. Would start with trimming infected leaves, then lighting along with less fertz and if all else fails up your water change schedule!
