Lets see...

There r... Tropical, Longnose, Alligators, Cubans, Croc type 1.. etc...

BTW...those gars look awsome....

hybrids are no considered as one of the seven species of gar, so there is no croc.

Jordan and I are in agreement (along with Infblue) that #3 is a tropical gar.

are the two fish in picture 4 the same species? One could be Cuban, and the other gator?

I would have never thought #6 to be a spotted. The head/snout proportions seemed weird.

7 and 8 are juvenile shortnose gar

10...how many different species are in this picture? I woud say, far left one is a trop, bottom one is a spotted, far right one is a trop, very top is a cuban, and the middle one is a trop??

You made this very tricky!!

#3 is not a Tropicus
#4 are the same species
#6 just might be a spotted what makes you think it might be or might not be?

#7 and 8 are actually not Juvenile as the are close to 14 inches long!!!!! and Young of the year fish But they are Platostomus from two different localities One is from Kansas (#8) and the other from Wisconsin.(#7) Both where raised from fry this year. It is interesting to note just how different these fish look... They are for all practical matters the same general size. Wisconsin fish is about 1/2 inch shorter.

As for #10 still do not have it

so 3 is cuban? and 4 as well?
#6 just looks like the spotteds around here. with the flat nose etc. so am i right?!

obviously I am getting confused.

with 3, first instinct was cuban and since trop is wrong, then it must be cuban.

Jordan thinks the fish in 4 are trops, I think cubans.

The fish in 7 and 8 don't seem as bulky as I would expect for a 14" shortnose.

As for 6 and 9...#9 seemed all too familiar looking at the specimens I currently keep as well as a lot of Florida's on this forum (guessing they are mostly Florida's being as they are the most common in the fish trade) with 6, it was noticeably different in proportions so I am assuming it is the more rare to come by, I am assuming this to be spotted. Jordan used the 2/3's rule so that's why he came to his conclusion:grinno:

I give up on 10. it would not be IDing for me, but merely guessing...

3 and 4 are Tristoechus

#6 is a true spotted. and this has been established due to where the fish was obtained.(Ironicly it was exotic) Morphologic characteristics are odd with this animal. This has been noted in others as well. This is a key reason why you see us advanced gar keepers warning against this so called 2/3 rule or ever using snout length, head length alone as an identification characteristic. It does not fit in all cases and in captivity it is very skewed.
