demjor19;1521849; said:The photo says Atractosteus sp. That is the only reason I assumed it was a hybrid between two within that species...
And I didn't go by the "2/3" rule with that other pic...she was just joking around.

#6 is a true spotted. and this has been established due to where the fish was obtained.(Ironicly it was exotic) Morphologic characteristics are odd with this animal. This has been noted in others as well. This is a key reason why you see us advanced gar keepers warning against this so called 2/3 rule or ever using snout length, head length alone as an identification characteristic. It does not fit in all cases and in captivity it is very skewed.
which leaves #10...Polypterus;1521948; said:That pic has Atractosteus sp. as at the time we had no clue what the hell those fish where.. it is accurate as such to just say what the hell or Atractosteus sp.
This one actually came to me not by an LFS but by someone catching it. He held it for me as it was beyond strange to him and sent it.. Lots of unanswered questions there I cant answer but I received this fish under unusual circumstances. I really do not know if it was wild caught or just sent to me as such.. We now know the real story behind these fish and we know this fish was a bucket biology project.
Just as a fun fact Solomons Croc gar type 2 was obtained from the store I worked at for 4 years.. I actually saw the same fish and passed it up.. At the time I also was not working at the store but the wholesaler contacted me about these fish for an ID..I went and inspected close to 40 of them I never saw the type 2 in this batch but did recognize the same fish I received months earlier. About a month later I stopped in the store to say Hi to the employees I worked with that did not suck and noticed they had a tank of five of these fish one being different from the rest. I did not buy it but did plan on coming back for it.
Turns out Solomon was right on my heals and did recognize it...He bought it...
I actually returned the next day to buy that fish only to find it gone.
In a weird twist I've still become part of this fishes life...

Given new information that has come out in regards to the type 3 (A.spatula x L.osseus) there is a possible project in the works to formally describe and publish the relationships in both the type 1 and type 2. We will however likely keep the hybrid designations (per Primitivefish) for ease of use.sooo...will these crock gars ever get an official (scientific name) or will they always remain croc 1 and croc 2?
It is assumed they where never produced in any numbers and where from a later batch of these hybrids.I couldnt imagine finding a type 2 at a fish store! Why is it that the type 2 seems more rare then the type 1?

nice job on the guesses everyone; very cool to see that variation in the shortys as well--
