6" payara available locally - thoughts?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
HAH! Yes, I've read quite a bit about it on this site. I suppose I'm really curious about why it happens. I'm one of those people who usually learns a lesson the hard way. I want to try it for myself to know it's true.

I see raising this guy as a challenge. I'm going to do whatever I can to have him live a long and healthy life, and hopefully grow past the fabled 12" mark. I've got some larger tanks to move him into once he puts on some size, so hopefully that won't be an issue.

Oh lord. Well, in an effort to draw the fire, I should let you know that I picked up the scomb tonight. He's in decent shape, looks a little skinny though.

Turns out the guy I bought him from was a former MFKer that I used to interact on the forum with quite a bit. Nice guy.

Anyways, here's a pic. He's looking ok in the 120 for now, though I'm looking to pick up another power head soon.

::delicately sidesteps argument::

He looks pretty decently sized, nice pickup! I'm looking at the pic on my phone, is his eye cloudy or is it just the flash from the camera?

Any idea if the previous owner had him eating non live or not?

Cloudy eyes easy fix, some people say the sudden death is caused by head trauma or banging around.

LOL. Yeah, the previous owner had him on live. Said he was just getting to small goldfish before he decided to sell. I'm going to keep him on live for a bit longer. He's in the tank with my small golden knife who won't touch anything but live anyway, so I'm going to have to break both fish at once. For now, I just want him to get acclimated and happy. He seems a little freaked out by my bichir, but I'm not worried. That fat poly won't bother you unless you fit in his mouth.

In regards to the cloudy eye, I'm hoping its the camera flash, but I'll double check when I get home tonight. If it is cloudy, I'll just make sure the water is EXTRA clean for a couple weeks.

Well If it does have cloudy eye dont worry to much as it is easy to cure. Also I thought that was a big fat poly in the background lol.

Not a big deal in regards to the cloudy eye, you're on the right track with the super clean water. I was just curious if it was the flash since I was using my phone's smaller screen to look at the pic. Good luck with him, definitely post up a feeding video if you can!

Dude speak like a normal person... like I said go back to snakes, you don't know me in real life so you don't know who I am... some people on here do why don't you ask them about me and quit making guesses about who I am. you do your thing and ill do mine fact of the matter is all you do is critisize other people.. you may be rich and in canada were economic troubles are not as bad as the u.s. but seriously it was just a suggestion and no one got scammed so take your chillpill and stay with your reptiles... you litterally took a comment that had nothing to do with you and was a simple suggestion and twisted it into your own imaginary senario... and it is the exact same thing as going on craigslist and buy a good tank listed for cheap... close your dictionary and go back to reptiles....

Please tell us karaig19, why don't you direct the readers to the evidence that "all I do is criticize people". Additionally, do you mind telling us how intentionally lying to someone for personal monetary gain is the "exact same thing" as finding a 'priced for quick sale' type of deal on craigslist? By the way, economic downtime doesn't justify scamming other people.

It's funny how these users who were asking entry type of questions as little as a few months back are all of sudden internet experts saying things like "Don't come in here telling me what to do about fish". ;)

To the OP, I have lost 3 scombs to unknown causes. 2 consecutive ones in a 125G housed with polypterus, and 1 housed alone in a 75G. The one housed in a 75G by him/herself lived considerably longer, they were all about 4" in size. I personally believe that space is another key issue to what is purported as the "sudden death" theory.

It's nice to hear from someone with experience keeping these guys, albeit bad news. Were they all around 4" at the time of their deaths? Did you notice any aggression from the poly(s) or did they seem to ad to the scombs stress level? Is your 125 the 5' long version or the 6' long version of the tank?

The lone fish kept in a 75G was about 6" when it passed. From my very limited experience of keeping scombs, I could tell you that these are fish with very specific requirements (you already know that though). If I were to personally do it again, I would not keep anything with them at all. I won't sit here and pretend to have figured out something that we as a whole haven't figured out yet, I really don't know what the deal is. I never got them off live-feeders either. Although I've read of some cases here where keepers have been successful.

I'd actually love to get a redtail sometime. The 125 was 72" long.

Got my armatus on frozen foods a few days after I got him, never been fed a feeder.
