DavidR that is a concern for me the width. I didn't want to crowd them so that's why my tank is not heavily decorated. I increased the water temp to 82 degrees I want these guys to thrive.
 
I love this fish. I've tried over the past few months to get a pair but when ever I buy 2 1 dies. Not sure if is the strain we have by me or what they seem to be a bit touchy. I feed nls. I am also keeping the only 1 I have left in a 55 he's been there about 3 months and really I havnt even thought about moving him. Id be willing to bet if you keep up with your water changes a single pair with a pleco or something could live in that 55 for a long while.

Hi! I just popped in to update my Uarus are doing well. Still have all 6. They are hardy lively and beautiful. Tehy are getting their color, I also noticed they have a bright orange color under their neck and some irridecesnt blue on their face. But boy are they piggys when it comes to eating! They love peas and lettuce and bloodworms. They are about 5 inches long now. Still in the 55g, we do weekly 3/4 w/cs religiously.

I will post pictures later this eveing. My tank is full..we are getting rid of some fish this week as we just have to many. So dont judge! lol
 
I remember this thread when you got them. It's great to hear they are doing well. Pix are always good.........
 
Bubbles I actually found a couple Uaru for $15 each in Cincinnati. Although one died from the trip home. How do they do solo? Do they need to be in a group?

Hi Seppii! Im so happy for you!. Well i have a group, but from what i've read they are rather shy and like to have a buddy at the least; ideally. I have also read some that have successfully kept them solo. Maybe get a severum (similar look spiecies) as a buddy if you cant find another Uaru? Or just see how yours seems to behave and play it by ear. Sorry I dont have better advice. But you have some options :)

The solo one you have..how big is it? Is it a baby with spots still? Does he seem to be doing ok eating well? Watching the one you have and monitor the behavior may tell you better if he needs a buddy.
 
Tom, Im looking into getting a canister filter as u recommended earlier...im thinking of buying the fluval 405 so i have for when i upgrade my tank..however while they are in the 55 i wanted to get your opinion on running the 405 with my HOB. And then transition the same 2 filters to my larger tank..

If your looking to seed the filter running it on an established tank will get it done. A 405 is a little big for a 55 but not to the point of not practical, you'll get a good turn over rate. If you like HOB filters Aquaclear 110's are a great filter you could get two for the price of one 405 and they're easy to maintane. I have two 110's and two 405's on my 225. I clean one a week in rotation. Just throwing out some options. The up side of a canester is you get a lot of room to load it up with bio-media and floss. The down side is cleanning it at a regular interval. If you are very good with regular maintance as you appear to be it will work out nicly for you. GL
 
Oh well in that case ill get to HOBs. Aquaclears you say? I have 1 Marineland right now. The filter media is getting so messy weekly its costing me alot to replace. But if its a good move Ill ditch the Marineland and buy 2 AquaClears 110 (can i use 2 on the 55 or just get a 2nd when i get my larger tank?)! Do you know of any wholesale places to buy the media for it?

Oh I stay on top of maintenance when I HAVE too..id rather have less maintenance though lol
 
You can buy extra media at Petsmart. It has a foam block that you rinse and reuse no replacement cartidges required. You can put disposable floss under the foam block or a bag of bio-media, charcoal etc. they are very flexable with a good flow rate and capacity for an HOB. IMO Aquaclears are the best HOB on the market.
