Heavy is definitely the word! The frame is about 60/70kg atleast, the finishing wood is around 55kg. I might take the top and the front off of it to move it into it's final position.
As far as breeding goes, the tank the africans are in is only about 3 months old but it looks like i have a breeding pair of pseudotropheus elongatus - yellow tails, the female has stopped eating and her mouth looks like she is holding. The pair will be staying in the current tank and everything else will be moved into the new one that is going on this stand.
I've just uploaded a video to youtube of their current tank
I had some spare tiles that are used mainly for suspended ceilings in public buildings. They are fibre glass which is obviously used as an insulator, so, i cut one of these up and fitted them in the gaps along the top of the tank, to help keep losing any heat through the bottom of the tank
After these are all in place, a sheet of 3mm ply wood will be fitted over them. This 3mm ply wood will be cut to the exact size of the base of the new tank (72 inches by 24 inches)
Not sure how much of a difference this will make to the heat of the tank.
I still have a roll of insulation to fit between the base of the glass tank and the 3mm ply that has still to be fitted on the stand. This insulation is designed for under laminate flooring, it is only a few millimeters thick and feels very spongy - looks to be perfect for the job!
For a first time at this i am delighted at the results.
Time spent on the build has been approximately 12 hours up to now. This is for two people and half the credit has to go to my father who gave up his time to help.
I have another hour or two to spend varnishing and sanding in between coats with glass paper ...
