6 x 2 x 2 180 GALLON TANK FOR MIXED CICHLIDS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is one expensive DIY stand.

For a 6 x 2 x 2 tank with a stand (which would be made of 18mm chipboard - utter rubbish, especially when water damaged) in the UK would cost £1000, $1600.

So for a setup that is solid built (you could throw it into your local river for a week, whip it out and sit your tank on it again without a problem, apart from a wet carpet) and has a better finish in my opinion than these shop bought £1000 tanks i think it is a bargain.

If DIY is not your thing seedubs1 and £1000 is too much money you could buy one second hand (which i have done before) but this setup is brand new. New tank, new wood - £590 all in? I'm not complaining :grinno:

Looks Great. What type of wood did you use? What did you use to skin it? and If you don't mind me asking, How much did it cost you to build the stand?

Thanks. The tank frame was skinned with a soft wood that was covered a 8mm oak veneer (bought like this then just cut down to size, only had an inch or two off each dimension) As for costs just read the last posts before yours, all is explained (post 32 & 34)

is the tank sitting on top of the padding / insulation material?

i am planning on building something like this as well but mine will sit on a wood floor and i would like to be able to move it around so i would likely cover the bottom in felt pads...do you think that would cause a problem?

Yes the tank is sitting on padding. I got the stuff off a roll of underlay normally used for under laminate/wood flooring. Cheap and easy to work with

Also, I don't think what you are suggesting would cause a problem, should be fine. Why not use castor wheels fitted under the stand to make it real easy to move around? Stick a few on there though, too much weight just for 4 wheels!
