That's totally correct, plus a small fish in big tank could get more stress than in a decent size tank. See! I can tell you're not newbie! :) I would say get a black arowana. You will enjoy him. A vendor here, Infinite Aquatics, has some nice black arowana at very good price. You can't find such quality arowana at that price anywhere. I currently keep two bought from him, and they eat Hikari food sticks on the same day I got them.

He was the same person where i was going to get the Arapaima from the beginning anyways. lol. I was really looking to his black/blue Aro's, but yesterday I went to my LFS and saw some Jardini's for sale. Unfortunately, I was reading through the forums this morning, and it seems that Jardini's are very aggressive and it scared me since I was planning on putting more community fishes. Would 8" black arowana be ok with a 60 gallon for few months? I'm really planning on upgrading after a year (hope it's enough time for black Aro's).

One more question, would it be alright to put black/blue Aro's with some fresh water rays? How about a Jardini with rays? Again, thanks for the replies.

I have not had hands on experience with black aros or jardinis, but I would expect blacks to be fine, while jars would probably rip em to shreds. Stingrays often swim up the side of the aquarium. When doing this the jardini could feel cornered and attack the stingrays disk. This could very possibly kill a stingray. A black however probably won't even give it a second look.

Jardinis are very aggressive and it's only rarely when they are kept with other fish. Even then the other fish are aggressive and their size and bigger.

So long story short, go with the black.

I wouldn't know about their growth rates so couldn't really help with 60gal question. But if a pima could last in there for a few months i'd say a black would have little trouble.

I have to agree with everyone else here, although I'll try not to be too rude. :irked: Irks me when people just pounce on other people. They should see my 30 gallon.... the one with the 6 arowanas, clown knife, 2 senegals, 2 endlis, and RTC. Ha! Give me your best shot.

Anyways.... arapaimas, from what I've heard, grow EXTREMELY fast and get extremely big. I was actually contemplating buying one from one of the vendors here, except I wouldn't be able to upgrade soon enough for it. Patience is a virtue, right? Once I'm settled into my career and have a nice house I'll build a big pool and THEN buy the arapaima I've always wanted.

You could get a black arowana if you wanted to... except like everyone else said the best bet is buying them big, at at those sizes they're already worth hundreds of dollars.

You could always get a Jardini. =) They grow slower than blacks and silvers, and they're not as long. You could get one of those wide, 360 tanks, like the one Chataika has for his/her Asian Aro, as an upgrade in the future. =)

PS: Oh LOL I guess you already ruled out Jardinis.

You could also get one of those nice, long finned fancy Oscars and keep it by itself in the 60. Just double the filtration and water changes and it should be fine.

Wow, ya'll reply so fast.. ray's are illegal here in California? I just saw a fresh water ray yesterday at the LFS. Is it really? I was looking on purchasing the leopaldi rays too.... =(

I thought they could be kept by permit? But I don't live in America so don't take my word.

If you can't get rays there are always pacman catfish.

Thanks for the offer but Oscars don't really apply to me. :(

Does anybody know if it's legal to have a leopaldi ray here in California? Ofcourse, I'll google it myself as well.
